What is the Piggyback Society?
So what exactly does "PiggyBack" mean anyway? PiggyBack is the name of an annual tournament and club, dedicated to the game of Diplomacy
The idea was started by Jeff Dwornicki in 1999 after another diplomacy convention called Dragonflight -- based in Seattle, WA. Jeff decided to "piggyback" Dragonflight and convince Seattle players to come down to Portland, Oregon. The idea was to host a tournament first, then build a Portland Dip club from the attendees -- thus, the Portland PiggyBack Society.
Diplo-what?
Diplomacy was initially created by Allan Calhamer in the late 50's. Since that time, the standard map (or game) has been modified several times to include variant maps and other modes of communication. Play mediums include Face-to-Face (FTF), play-by-mail (PBM), Play-by-Email (PBEM), and Real-Time (RT) play via the internet. Games are moderated by Game Moderators or GM's.
Now, imagine a world conquest game with multiple players. Many people immediately think of "Risk" or "Axis & Allies". Now remove all playing cards, dice, charts, spinning wheels, etc. All that remains is a map, a group of players bound by set rules of manuever, and each individual's own tactics and strategy. Sometimes role playing even occurs.
In a game where everything is negotiated, alliances quickly form out of necessity for survival. But be careful! Turn your back or leave a close ally unchecked and he/she could quickly become your worst enemy. To call a devoted "diplomat" a back-stabbing liar may not be inaccurate. A player who forms strong alliances or stays one step ahead of his enemies AND allies may be playing for the solo.
You may have heard of "sweet sixteen". In standard Diplomacy, nothing is sweeter then 18. The first player to claim 18 supply centers in a fall season, claims the solo win. In diplomacy, there are no prizes for second or third place finishes (a tournament is the only exception). You either win, lose, or draw.
