Has Yet to Visit Gerald Ford's Grave

President Ford is one of two Presidents I have seen in person. When I was being given a private tour of the White House in 1976 by family friend Dick Cheney, who was then the White House ChIef of Staff (my mother went to High School with him, even going on double-dates with him and his future wife Lynne), I saw President Ford in the Oval Office (which was just next door to Mr. Cheney's office). Ford was at his desk reading a newspaper. I saw him again after his presidency when he spoke at the University of Wyoming, and he waved at me in response as he exited the building where he spoke. In 1991, I wrote to President Ford curious about the legality of his pardon of Richard Nixon. He responded with a personally written letter defending his action, and send me an autographed photo.

President Ford's death on 26 December 2006 caught me home in the Denver area, buried in so many feet of snow that air travel was impossible. As a result, I was unable to attend the ceremonies in Washington or Grand Rapids, and my trip to visit his gravesite will need to wait. May he rest in peace.
